upper extremity

scapula

aka shoulder blade

clavicle

"s" shaped bone, aka collarbone

articulates w/manubrium of the sternum on medial end
articulates w/acromion process of scapula on lateral end

pectoral girdle

scapula and clavicle

acromion process
(ah-CRO-me-on)

scapula
broad, flat process at the end of the scapular spine. articulates w/clavicle

coracoid process
(COR-uh-coyd)

scapula
an attachment point for some of the muscles

scapular spine

scapula

on the posterior surface is a ridge called the spine of the scapula

vertebral margin of scapula/medial margin

edge nearest the vertebral column. the straighter edge

axillary margin of scapula/lateral margin

edge farthest from the vertebral column. curved edge

glenoid cavity

scapula

upper lateral edge. articulates w/head of the humerus (the hole for the humerus)

humerus

bone of the upper arm

head of humerus

smooth, rounded end that articulates w/the glenoid cavity of the scapula to form the shoulder joint

greater tubercle

larger projection on the proximal end of the humerus that serve as attachment sites for the muscles of the rotator cuff.

found on the proximal lateral surface of the humerus

lessor tubercle

smaller projection on the proximal end of the humerus that serve as attachment sites for the muscles of the rotator cuff.

found on the proximal ANTERIOR surface of the humerus

deltoid tuberosity

a roughened process on the lateral surface about mid-shaft of the humerus

lateral epicondyle

above the capitulum is a knob-like projection similar to the one above the trochlea

several extensor muscles of the forearm attach to this epicondyle

capitulum
(KAHPICH-uhlum)

a rounded process on the lateral distal surface of the humerus

this process articulates w/the head of the radius

medial epicondyle

a knob-like projection located above the trochlea

trochlea
(TROW-klee-ah)

the grooved process on the medial distal surface of the humerus that articulates w/the ulna

coronoid fossa
(CAW-rahnoyd)

a depression on the anterior surface of the humerus, superior to the trochlea (smaller indentation)

olecranon fossa
(ul-LEC-rah-non)

depression on the posterior distal surface of the humerus (larger indentation)

ulna

medial bone in the forearm when arm is in anatomical position

articulates proximally witht he trochlea of the humerus and the head of the radius and distally w/the ulnar notch of the radius

olecranon process
(ul-LEC-rah-non)

the posterior proximal end of the ulna

fits into the olecranon fossa of the humerus when the forearm is extended

coronoid process
(CAW-rahnoyd)

on the anterior proximal end of the ulna.

fits into the coronoid fossa of the humberus when the forearm is flexed

radial notch

on the lateral proximal end of the ulna

allows the head of the radius to rest against the ulna

head of ulna

on the distal end of the ulna. a rounded structure that articulates w/the radius

styloid process (stylus) of ulna

a small pointed projection on the medial distal end of the ulna

this is the bump that can be palpated on the medial surface of the wrist

radius

the bone on the lateral side of the forearm

head of the radius

the rounded proximal end of the radius that articulates w/the ulna

radial tuberosity

a roughened (pointed) area on the anteromedial surface of the radius

styloid process (stylus) of radius

pointed projection on the lateral surface of the distal end of the radius

carpal bones

bones of the wrist

metacarpal

bones of the palm of the hand

phalanges

the bones of the fingers
