Atom The smallest unit of an element to retain its chemical and physical properties.
Proton Positively charged, sub-atomic particle.
Neutron Uncharged (neutral), sub-atomic particle.
Electron Negatively charged, sub-atomic particle.
Fission The process of breaking apart the nucleus of large atoms into smaller pieces; releases additional neutrons and energy.
Fusion The process of combining the nuclei of smaller atoms to produce larger atoms; releases energy.
Element A substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Compound A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.
Mixture A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded.
Radioactive decay The breakdown of an unstable nucleus into one or more different pieces (nuclides).
Isotope An atom with the same number of protons as other atoms of the same element, but a different number of neutrons.
Ion An atom that has gained one or more electrons and has a negative or positive charge.
