Composition How you classify matter
Mixtures Physical combinations of two or more substances. Most matter occurs as this.
Chemistry The science that investigates and explains the structure and properties of matter.
Analysis Means to "break down" or "decompose"
Synthesis means to "put together" or "compose"
Matter anything that takes up space and has mass
Mass the measure of the amount of matter that an object contains
Properties the characteristics and behavior of matter
Qualitative an observation made without measurement
Quantitative an observation made with a measurement
Substance matter with the same fixed composition and properties
Mixture a combination of two or more substances in which the basic identity of each substance is not changed
physical change a change in matter that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance
physical properties characteristics of a sample of matter that can be observed or measured without any change to its identity
heterogeneous mixture a mixture that does not have a uniform composition and its individual substances remain distinct
homogeneous mixture a mixture or solution, that always has a uniform composition and is the same throughout
Solution consists of a solute that is dissolved into a solvent
alloy a solid solution that contains different metals and sometimes nonmetallic substances
solvent the substance that dissolves the solute
aqueous solution when the solvent is water
elements the simplest form of matter
periodic table organizes elements and uses chemical symbols that are universally understood
compound a chemical combination of two or more different elements joined together in a fixed proportion
chemical formula a combination fo the chemical symbols that show what elements make up a compound and the number of atoms of each element
3 states of matter solid, liquid, or gas
volatile substances that change to a gas easily at room temperature
density the amount of matter contained in a unit of volume
density of water 1 g/mL
low density anything lower than 1 g/mL
high density anything higher than 1 g/mL
law of conservation of mass matter is neither created nor destroyed
endothermic chemical reactions that absorb heat energy
