The Fourth Amendment | The government cannot arrest a person, search his home, or take his belongings without a legal warrant. To get a warrant; the government must declare what it is looking for or intends to do and why. |
The Fifth Amendment | People suspected of serious crimes must be formally accused by a grand jury. A person cannot be tried for the same crime twice or be forced to give evidence against himself. The government must be guided by the law when taking away a persons life, freedom, or property. |
The Sixth Amendment | Guarantees the right to a speedy trial by an impartial jury and to have a lawyer that will present your case and call your witnesses. |
The Seventh Amendment | The right to a trial by jury |
The Eighth Amendment | No excessive bail; and no cruel and unusual punishment. |
The Ninth Amendment | Unwritten rights of the people |
The Tenth Amendment | Reserved rights of the states; Prevents Federal Government from becoming too powerful with "implied" powers. |
