Dionysus Greek god of fertility and wine. Depicted in two different manners. As an older bearded man= wine, younger androgynous male- fertility. Dionysus was born out of zeus's knee. Zeus was caught having an affair with a mortal and to protect him from Hera put him in his knee.
Greek Mythology Center of all greek understanding. Many
satyrs and maenads male and female followers of Dionysus. Left house and home for drunken orgies in the woods. Satyrs always depicted with erect peni. Maenads also aka as bacchae. Prominent characters in satyr plays, which followed a trilogy with a lighthearted look at the preceding stories.
dithyrambs hymn like choral poems sung by 50 men to Dionysus. A competition eventually grew out of these and then they become literary.
534 BC Most important date in Theatre History. Year Thespis won the dramatic competition at City of Dionysia.
