MAN IN A RED TURBAN

Jan Van Eyck

GIOVANNI ARNOLFINI AND HIS BRIDE

1434

Major role in popularizing oil painting & estab. portraiture as an important art form. He portrayed himself in the mirror.
Rogier Van Der Weyden

DEPOSITION

1435

Resembles a relief carving in which biblical figures act out a drama of passionate sorrow as if on a shallow theatrical stage. No art bears his name. Many figures of his are right on the picture plane.
Hugo Van Der Goes

PORTINARI ALTERPIECE

ca. 1476

Rare instance in the awarding of a major commission of Florence to a Flemish painter. Italians admired the incredibly realistic details of Hugos figures. Designed on oval. Jesus portrayed as an ordinary infant, instead of wizened, self-knowing entity.
Martin Schongauer

SAINT ANTHONY TORMENTED BY DEMONS

ca. 1480-1490

Most skilled of the early masters of metal engraving. Used a burin to incise lines and create a variety of values and tones. Saint Anthony is always depicted as being tormented.
