| Ethiopia | The country that remained independent in Africa thanks to Menelik II. |
| China | The country that, due to imperialism, underwent the Boxer rebellion and the Opium War. |

| Panama | The country in which the Panama canal was built. |

| Colony | A settlement in a country or place by another country. |
| Lilioukalani | Queen of Hawaii who was overthrown in 1893. |
| Boers | Dutch settlers in Africa. |
| Algeria | A country in Northern africa that was run by the French. |
| Emilio Aguinaldo | The Filipino nationalist leader who declared that the Filipinos should be independent from the U.S.. |
| Crimean War | The war in 1853 that broke out between the Russians and the Ottomans. |
| Protectorate | a country or settlement that is protected by another more powerful country. |
| Egypt | the country that modernized during the time period under the reign of Muhammad Ali. |
