ostealgia any pain linked to an abnormal condition w/in a bone
osteitis inflammation of bone
osteomalacia abnormal softening of bones due to disease
osteomyelitis inflammation of the bone & bone marrow
osteonecrosis destruction & death of bone tissue
Paget's disease aka "osteitis deformans"; disease that causes bones to break down and repaired abnormally = deformed bones that break easily
periostitis inflammatin of the periosteum (bone covering)
rickets caused by calcium & Vitamin D deficiency that causes bones to become deformed
talipes aka "clubfoot", congenital disorder in which the foot may be turned inward or outward
Ewing's sarcoma group of malignant cancers that most commonly affect children & teens; normally appears in the shaft of long bones; affects the connective tissue
myeloma malignant tumor of the bone marrow tissues; causes fractures & is usually fatal
osteochondroma benign (harmless) tumor on the bone surface that's covered by cartilage
osteoporosis marked loss of bone density & increase in porosity associated with aging
vertebral crush fractures vertebrae become so weak that the collapse under minimal stress; causes pain, loss in height & dowager's hump
Colles' fracture wrist fracture (@ the end of the radius); happens when someone tries to break a fall by landing on their hands
osteoporotic hip fracture a broken hip
fracture fx; a broken bone
greenstick fracture bone is only partially bent or broken
closed fracture bone is broken but not the skin
open fracture bone is broken and caused an open wound in the skin
comminuted fracture bone is splintered or crushed
compression fx bone is compressed together on itself
spiral fx bone has been twisted apart
stress fx small cracks in bones due to chronic excessive impact (often seen in athletes)
fat embolus clot made of fat cells from a long-bone fracture; may block the blood vessel
crepitation crackling sensation that is felt & heard when the ends of a broken bone move together
callus bulging deposit around the area of the break, eventually becomes bone
