The Particulate Nature of Matter The idea that all matter is made of very small particles are called "atoms".
Atom The smallest unit of matter that has the characteristics of an element. It consists of three main types of subatomic particles: protons neutrons and electrons. The basic building blocks of matter.
Element A substance conasisting of only one type of atom.
Molecule Two or more atoms chemically combined (bonded).
Compound Two different types of atoms present in the same molecule
Mixture Different types off atoms and/or molecules physically combined (not chemically bonded).
Solid The atoms within the substance move around quickly yet the substance stays stationary -represented by an "(s)" in a chemical formula.
Liqiud The atoms within the substance move around slowly and randomly -represented by an "(l)" in a chemical formula.
Gas The atoms within the substance move around quickly and far apart -represented by an "(g)" in a chemical formula.
Matter Whatever has mass and takes up space - ANY AND EVERYTHING!!!
Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP)...
Physical properties The characteristics of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance's chemical composition. Originally materials can always be recovered.
ex.) melt, boil, color, etc.
Chemical properties The characteristics of a substance that cannot be observed or measured without altering the substance's chemical composition. New substance usually formed.
ex.) reactions to acids and other chemicals, etc.
Qualitative, Quantitative observations, measurements
