Definitions

Polar Molecule Opposite ends of a molecule have opposite charges due to a difference of electronegativity.
Cohesion When hydrogen bonds hold a substance together.
Adhesion The clinging of one substance to another.
Surface Tension A measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid.
Heat A measure of the total amount of kinetic energy due to molecular motion in a body of matter.
Temperature Measures the intensity of heat due to the average kinetic energy of the molecules.
Specific heat The amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost for 1 g of that substance to change its temperature by 1 degree C.
Specific heat of water 1 cal/g/degree C
Heat of vaporization The quantity of heat a liquid must absorb for 1 g of it to be converted from the liquid to a gas.
water's heat of vaporization 540 cal/g at 100 degrees Celcius.
What is the solvent of life? Water.
Aqueous solution A solution in which water is the solvent.
Hydrophilic Any substance that has an affinity for water.
Hydrophobic A substance that is nonionic and nonpolar that actually seems to repel water.
Hydroxide group structure? OH⁻
Acid A substance that increases the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution.
Base A substance that reduces the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution.
pH −log[H⁺]
Buffer A substance that minimizes change in the concentrations of H⁺ and OH⁻ in a solution.
Electronegativity The attraction of electrons to an atom.
Heat of fusion A substance goes from a liquid to a solid
Water's heat of fusion? 80 cal/g at 0°C
