Vikings reached North America around 874 AD
Lief Eriksson A Scandinavian Viking from the early 1000s. he sailed across the North Atlantic to North America and settled temporarily. He was important because he brought back knowledge of the Atlantic, the Native Americans, and resources.
Prince Henry the Navigator A Portuguese explorer from the early 1400s who founded a navigation school for sailors. He also financed the research of maps, technology and the exploration of the African Coast.
He was important because this added knowledge and tools for sailors and helped start the Age of Exploration (T,I,e)
Bartolomeu Dias a Portuguese explorer in the late 1400s. He sailed to the southern tip of Africa (Cape of Good Hope) AND mapped the coast of Africa. He was important because this added geographic knowledge by mapping (I)
Vasco De Gama a Portuguese explorer in the late 1400s. He sailed past the Cape of Good Hope to Asia/ India, mapped east coast of Africa, and established an all-water trade route to Asia. He is important because he added geographic knowledge and gained wealth for Portugal. (I, E)
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer from the late 1400s. He sailed across the Atlantic and was the first European explorer to discover North America. He was important because he brought back maps to get to North America and brought back knowledge about undiscovered land.
