What is the main idea of the characteristics of living things?
All living things share some common characteristics.
What are the characteristics of living things?
cellular orgainization, the chemicals of life, evergy use, response surroundings, growth development and reproduction
all organisms are composed of one or more cells
the chemicals of life
all organisms use or are composed of similar chemicals
all cells/organisms use chemical energy to "power" themselves
response to surrounding
all organisms interact with their surroundings
growth and development
all organisms get bigger and more complex
all organisms procreate by making new individials incorporating some part of their "parents"
sexual and asexual
Can living things come from non-living things?
What is Redi's experiment?
controlled experiment that showed 2 identical glass jars with meat. The only difference is that one was covered and the other one was not. Thus showing that flies do not come from decaying meat they come flies laying eggs on decaying meat in open jars
What is Pasteur's Experiment?
conrolled experiment that showed that new bacteria in broth appeared only when they were produced by exisitng bacteria. Again, they showed that living things do not arise form nonliving material
What are the needs of living things?
all living thins need food, water, living space and stable internal comdiitions
Tell us about the food. What are the 2 types of ways that orgainisms make food? Define them.
Source of energy to live.
Autotroph-make their own food
Heterotrophs- can't make their own food
Talk about the importance of water in organisms.
All living things need water to survive. They need water to get hemicals from their surroundings, break down food, move substances within their body and reproduce
Talk about the living spaces of organisms.
They all need to place to live, to get food, and find shelter.
Talk about stable internal conditions.
Organisms must be able to keep the conditions inside thier body stable even when conditions in their surroundings changed significantly.
Maintaining stable internal conditions
