| PROPER NOUN | names a SPECIFIC person, place, thing, or idea |
| PRONOUN | Takes the place of a noun. |
| 1st PERSON PRONOUN | refers to the person speaking [I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, ours] |
| 2ND PERSON PRONOUN | refers to the person spoken to [you, your, yours] |
| 3RD PERSON PRONOUN | refers to the person spoken about [he, him, his, she, her, hers, it, its, they, them, their, theirs] |
| NOMINATIVE PRONOUN | a pronoun that can function as the subject of a sentence |
| OBJECTIVE PRONOUN | a pronoun that can function as the direct object, indirect object or object of the preposition. Cannot serve as the subject of a sentence; cannot show ownership. |

| NCI (noun clause identifier) | a CONJUNCTION or PRONOUN that starts a noun dependent clause (that, who, whether, why, etc) |
| PREPOSITION | words like in, out, up, down, to, for, on, off, from, by, etc. --begin prepositional phrases |
| PARTICIPLE (verbal) | a verb form ending in -ing or -ed that is used as an adjective |
| GERUND (verbal) | a verb form ending in -ing that is used as a noun |
