9 Parts of Speech nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, verbals, interjections.
NOUN names a person, place, thing, or idea
PROPER NOUN names a SPECIFIC person, place, thing, or idea
PRONOUN Takes the place of a noun.
1st PERSON PRONOUN refers to the person speaking [I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, ours]
2ND PERSON PRONOUN refers to the person spoken to [you, your, yours]
3RD PERSON PRONOUN refers to the person spoken about [he, him, his, she, her, hers, it, its, they, them, their, theirs]
NOMINATIVE PRONOUN a pronoun that can function as the subject of a sentence
OBJECTIVE PRONOUN a pronoun that can function as the direct object, indirect object or object of the preposition. Cannot serve as the subject of a sentence; cannot show ownership.
POSSESSIVE PRONOUN a pronoun that shows ownership
RELATIVE PRONOUN who, whose, whom, which, that.
A PRONOUN that starts adjective dependent clauses
ACTION VERB expresses physical or mental activity
LINKING VERB a verb that does not show action and links the subject with the complement of a sentence (is, are, was, were, have, has, etc.)
HELPING VERB accompanies an action verb or linking verb to form a verb phrase (is, are, was, were, have, has, etc.)
ADJECTIVE a word that describes a NOUN or a PRONOUN and answers the questions What kind? Which one? Whose? How many?
ADVERB modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb and answers the questions Where? When? Why? How? How much?
PROPER ADJECTIVE an adjective formed from a proper noun and begins with a capital letter. Ex: America (N). . .American (Adj)
COORDINATING CONJUNCTION a CONJUNCTION that joins words, phrases, and clauses.
FANBOYS= for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION a CONJUNCTION that starts an adverb dependent clause (because, if, since, when, etc)
NCI (noun clause identifier) a CONJUNCTION or PRONOUN that starts a noun dependent clause (that, who, whether, why, etc)
PREPOSITION words like in, out, up, down, to, for, on, off, from, by, etc.
--begin prepositional phrases
PARTICIPLE (verbal) a verb form ending in -ing or -ed that is used as an adjective
GERUND (verbal) a verb form ending in -ing that is used as a noun
INFINITIVE (verbal) To + verb, used as a noun, adjective, or adverb
INTERJECTION A word that expresses emotion (oh, wow, ouch, etc.)
