I. SPINOTRANSVERSE MUSCLES (2)

most superficial of the back muscles only present in neck and upper thorax

1.Splenius Capitis

most superficial of the extenser muscles
attaches to the occipital bone of the head
extends
laterally flexes
rotates head

2.Splenius cervicis

does not attach to the head
extends
laterally flexes
rotates head

II.ERECTOR SPINAE MUSCLES (3)

divided into three paralell regions, medial, intermedate & lateral

3. Iliocostalis muscle

most lateral of the three erector spinae MM's
extends
laterally flexes vertebral column

2.Longissimus muscle

(between iliocostalis and spinalis)
extends vertebral column

1. Spinalis muscle

closest to spine

III. TRANSVERSOSPINALIS MUSCLE (2)

deep muscles
angle laterallyorigin near transverse process
to insertion at base of spinous process

1. Semispinalis

responsible for extension of the spine

2.Multifidus

mutliple muscles
covered by illiocostalis so to work them you have to go through illocostais first
extends vertebral column

IV. SUBOCCIPITAL MUSCLES

deepest of the extensors of the back
there are 4 near the neck
