air mass | A body of air that has about the same temperature and moisture throughout. |
anticyclone | Winds spiraling outward from a high-pressure center. |
cold front | Forms when cold air moves under warm air which is less dense and pushes air up (produces thunderstorms heavy rain or snow). |
contenental Artic (cA) | Air masses that come from very cold land masses. |
continental polar (cP) | Cold dry air. forms usually over northern Canada and Alaska |
continental tropical (cT) | Air masses that come from tropical land areas. |
cyclone | Rapid inward circulation of air masses about a low-pressure center. |
front | The atmospheric phenomenon created at the boundary between two different air masses. |
maritime polar (mP) | Originates over the ocean in high latitudes. These air masses are both cold & dampe but not usually as cold as a cP. |
maritime tropical (mT) | Originates over a warm trioical ocean. It acquires warmth, mositure & humidity. Moving couterclockwise, the high pressure over the Atrlantic brings heat & humidity to the Midwest & Eastern US in the summer. |
occluded front | A front where a warm air mass is caught between two colder air masses and brings cool temperatures and large amounts of rain and snow |
rawinsonde | A method of upper-atmosphere meteorological observation conducted by means of a radiosonde tracked by radar |
stationary front | Cold and warm air masses meet, but neither can move the other. Usually resulting in rain for days. |
warm front | A front where warm air moves over cold air and brings drizzly rain and then are followed by warm and clear weather |
