cell theory This says that all living things are made of cells, that cells are the basic unit of structure and function and that cells only come from other cells.
cytoplasm a jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended
organelle are structures specialized to perform distinct processes within a cell.
prokaryotic cell a type of cell that do not have a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles and they are microscopic single-celled organisms.
eukaryotic cell a type of cell with a membrane-enclosed nucleus and membrane-enclosed organelles.
cell membrane forms a boundary between a cell and the outside environment and controls the passage of materials into and out of a cell.
phospholipid is a molecule composed of 3 basic parts: a charged phosphate group, glycerol and 2 fatty acid chains
fluid mosaic model model that describes the arrangement and movement of the molecules that make up a cell membrane
selective permeability a property of cell membrane which means it allows some, but not all, materials to cross.
receptor protein that detects a signal molecule and performs an action in response
active transport drives molecules across a membrane from a low concentration to a higher concentration.
endocytosis is the process of taking liquids or fairly large molecules into a cell.
phagocytosis is a type of endocytosis in which the membrane engulfs large particles.
exocytosis the opposite of endocytosis is the release of substances out of a cell by the fusion of a vesicle.
