Review of Chapter 32: The Golden Calf 69-70
When Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people went to Aaron and said to him, "Come, make gods for us." Aaron told them to take off their gold rings from their ears." And he made a mold, and cast an image of a calf from the gold, and an altar was built, and the people bowed down before the calf. God becomes angry, but Moses implores the Lord not to turn his anger upon them. Moses returns to the people, but sees the calf and he becomes angry, as well, toward the people. Moses takes the calf and burns it, turning it into powder. Moses wants to know why the calf was built, and Aaron says the people are "bent on evil." Moses orders a massacer of his own people, and about 3000 die on that day. Moses goes to the Lord and asks him to forgive the people, but the Lord will not do this, and he says he will finally punish them for their sin.
Made by the people, under Aaron, from their gold, and worshiped near Mt. Sinai.
