Hebrews | People who speak Aramaic who are born in Palestine. They were not familiar with Jewish practices: circumcision, Temple and Synagogue worship, respect for Torah James, Peter, and most of the original twelve apostles. They did not believe in or follow the Jewish practices. |
Hellenists | People who spoke Greek, and were born outside of Palestine. They were worldly familiar with the practices of Jewish, with Greek philosophical background, synagogue worshipers Stephen, and Barnabas Apollos. They were more educated. |
Pharisees | A group or movement in early Judaism, most scholars claim they are Rabbis who taught the oral and written Torah. Leading opponents of Jesus. They were often disapproved of for their religious beliefs. They are scholars, lawyers of Torah, and leaders. |
"God-Fearers" | People who are circumcised but non-Jews who worship God. They show God's love. Cornelius is an example of a this. |
Proselytes | A person who changes their opinion and religion from one to the next. A non-Jew but acts like Jews. |
Zealots | People who were Jewish and wanted a David-like king to be their Messiah Patriotic, fanatical group. They wanted war against Rome and were Right-Wing extremists. They secretly planned Paul's death. Simon was a one of these. |
Essenes | Jewish people who lived in highly organized groups that withdrew from society and gave up worldly things. They believed in purity but not in marriage. |
"Gentile" Roman | A non-Jew Roman. |
"Gentile" Greek | A non-Jew Greek. |
Gentiles | A person who isn't a Jew and is not circumcised. They believed in the theological and ethical teaching of Judaism. |
Jew | The term applied to the people of God after the Babylonian exile. |
Judaism | "Jews" This is the religious outlook, beliefs, and practices associated with the Jews. |
Sadducees | A group of Jewish leaders that supported priestly authority and rejected traditions not directly related to the Torah, such as life after death. They didn't believe in angels. |
Sanhedrin | (From the Greek to mean "assembly" people coming together.) A legislative and judicial body made up of seventy-one members. |
Christians Christianity | The followers of Jesus of Nazareth who claim that he is the Jewish Messiah.Christianity is the collective body of Christians who believe the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. |
Samaritans | They were the remainders of the Northern Tribes. They were intermarried with invaders. They worshipped Yahweh or God. They had a "temple" in the north. They did not like the Jews and thought of them as mongrels, and apostates. |
