| The Convention | representative assembly convened (September 1792) during the French Revolution. It abolished the monarchy, established the First Republic, and condemned (January 1793) King Louis XVI to death for treason. During the Reign of Terror (April 1793-July 1794), the convention was dominated by the 12-member Committee of Public Safety and thereafter by the Thermidorian faction. The convention was dissolved October 26, 1795, after the establishment of the Directory. |
