Willa Cather (1873-1947) born in Virginia. she wasnt married and lived in Nebraska and Pittsburgh. she didnt go after the traditional women's life.
Nathanial Hawthorne (1804-1864) born in Salem Massachussetts and his ancestors were judges at the Salem witch trial. his characters are always Puritans even though he was not a Puritan. he wrote Scarlett Letter and is a gothic writer.
Bernard Malamud (1914-1986) born in Brooklyn. grew up during the great depression married a Roman Catholic (he was a jew)
