Judiciary act of 1789. - Get new court up and running.
- Appoints 6 justices.
- Writes charter and rules.
Hamilton's financial plan. 1.) Funding the debt: repaying the debt.
2.) National government takes on the state's debts.
3.) Established the national bank.
4.) Levy taxes.
What effect did the national government taking on state's debt have on our new country? - Gives the national government power over the states. (south doesn't like this)
- Moves capital from NYC to D.C. so south would feel better.
What effect did the creation of the national bank have on the U.S.? How did it work? - Didn't know whether it was constitutional. Strict construction vs. loose construction.
- Federal government keeps 20 shares leaving 80 for the rich to buy.
What is a tariff? A protective tax.
What is an exercise tax? A tax on goods sold= sales tax.
Whiskey's Rebellion The exercise tax led to a rebellion from whiskey makers, we defeat them. This is proof that our constitution works.

XYZ Affair New french government was no being respectful. 3 mystery men claimed that to see the new government our ambassador needed to pay. The result was Anti- French feeling.
Sedition Acts Made it illegal to criticize the President
Alien Acts Said that new immigrants had to wait 14 instead of 5 years. Reasoning was that most immigrants became democratic republicans and the federalists didn't want so many new members in the opposing party.
Virginia and Kentucky resolutions Madison and Jefferson retaliate against adams and write that a state can declare an law unconstitutional. Idea of NULLIFICATION.
Election of 1800 It was a tie and so the house of representatives had to vote, they tie. Hamilton throws his weight around and convinces half of his supporters to vote for Jefferson and other half for Adams, Jefferson won. important change in parties.
Louisiana Purchase Napolian wanted to use Hati to settle louisiana area but he was fighting an expensive war in Europe and so he sold us Louisiana Territory, 13 states $15 million.

Napolionic war in Europe France and England were impressing (kidnapping) our sailors to fight. We tell them to stop but they don't.
Embargo acts Say that no U.S. ships will leave our harbor. So that our sailors will not be impressed. Bad for business.
Non- Intercourse Acts U.S. ships will not trade with England or France. Kept us out of war. Good.
Madisons agreement Madison makes an agreement with france so that they would respect our right as a country. England still is kidnapping our sailors.
Tecumesh of Shawnhees Tries to make peace but it doesn't work out. he goes to the south to rally support and leaves his brother in charge.

Battle of New Orleans Andrew Jackson, happens after treaty is signed, we beat them.

Monroe Doctrine While Napoleonic war was going on, the European countries neglected their colonies in America. Many of these colonies had revolutions and we supported them. We told Europe to keep out of western hemisphere and we would keep out of their affairs.
Missouri CompromiseMissouri wanted to join the union as a slave state, but this would upset the balance of slave and non slave states. Henry clay first separates Mass. into Mass. and Maryland to balance, Missouri becomes a state. 36'30 line drawn extended into Louisiana future states south of line slave states. north= free states.
Unholy Bargin Statistical tie between Jackson and Adams. Clay decides that Adams should win and strikes a bargain with Adams. If he helps Adams win then Adams would make him secretary of state.
What does Jackson do after the Unholy Bargain? He forms the Democratic party- a people's party that would stand up to the corruption in D.C.

Indian Removal Act There was fertile valuable land in Georgia and Alabama but it was occupied by The Cherokee and other tribes. The US government sues them for the land. the supreme court says the government cant take the land. jackson overrides it. allots land to indians in o.k.
Trail of tears March to Oklahoma 1/4 of cherokees die
Nullification CrisisSouth doesn't like tariffs that protect the northern industry to protest them Calhoun writes about states rights and says that S.C. will secede from the union, and not pay tariff. Force bill passed by Jackson threatened to send troops.
Henry clay- 1.) S.C. stays in union and collects tariffs. 2.) The National Government will reduce tariffs.
