Designated AgentAn EMT-B or other person authorized by a Medical Director to give medications and provide emergency care. The transfer of such authorization to a designated agent is an extension of the Medical Director's license to practice medicine.
Standing ordersA policy or protocol issued by a Medical Director that authorizes EMT-Bs and others to perform particular skills in certain situations.
Off-line Medical Direction"Behind the scenes" medical direction. These are standing orders that allows the EMT-B to give certain medical attntion without speaking to the Medical Director or another physician.
On-line Medical DirectionOrders from the on-duty physician given by radio or phone. Can be requested at any time you feel that medical advice would be beneficial to patient care.
911 systemA system for telephone access to report emergencies. A dispatcher takes the information and alerts EMS or the fire or police departments as needed.
Special designations that hospitals may haveTrauma center, burn center, pediatric center, poison control center.
