Element A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means
Metals An element that is shiny and that conducts heat and electricity well
Non-metals An element that does not have the characteristics of a metal (conducts heat and electricity poorly)
Metalloid Elements that have the properties of both metals and nonmetals
Compound A substance that is composed of two or more elements that are chemically combined
Mixture A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined (or react to form a compound)
Solution A mixture composed of particles of two or more substances that are distributed equally among each other
Solute The substance that is dissolved in a solution
Concentration A measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent expressed in g/mL
Solubility The ability of the solute to dissolve in a solvent at a certain temperature
Suspension A mixture in which particles of a substance are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas, but are large enough that they settle out or can be filtered out
Colloid A mixture in which particles of a substance are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas, but are not heavy enough to settle out or to be filtered out
