| Tunica albuginea | Dense irregular connective tissue that lies beneath the outer layer (germinal epithelium) |
| Ovarian cortex | Within the tunica albuninea and contains the ovarian follicles; corpus sponginosum |
| Ovarian medulla | Inner layer of tissue that contains the blood vessels and nerves |
