Action Origin Insertion

Occipitofrontalis: Frontal Belly

O: Epicranial aponeurosis
I: Skin of eyebrow and bridge of nose
A: Raises eyebrows, wrinkles forehead (Suprise face)

Occipitofrontalis: Occipital Belly

O: Epicranial aponeurosis
I: Epicranial aponeurosis
A: Tenses and retracts scalp

Temporoparietalis

O: Fascia around external ear
I: Epicranial aponeurosis
A: Tenses scalp, moves auricle of ear (Wiggle your ears-if talented)

Temporalis

O: Along temporal lines of the skull
I: Coronoid process of mandible
A: Elevates mandible

Zygomaticus Major

O: Zygomatic bone near zygomaticomaxillary structure
I: Angle of mouth
A: Retracts and elevates corners of mouth (Smile)

Orbicularis Oculi

O: Median margin of orbit
I: Skin around eyelids
A: Closes eye

Orbicularis Oris

O: Maxilla and mandible
I: Lips
A: Compresses, purses lips

Masseter

O: Zygomatic arch
I: Lateral surface of mandibular ramus
A: Elevates mandible and closes the jaw

Platysma

O: Superior thorax between cartilage of second rib and acromion of scapula
I: Mandible and skin of cheek
A: Tenses skin of neck; depresses mandible

Sternocleidomastoid

O: Two bellies: clavicular head attaches to the sternal end of clavicle; sternal head attaches to manubrium
I: Mastoid process
A: Together: flexes the neck Alone: bends head toward shoulders and turns face to opposite side (roation-shake head no)

Buccinator

O: Alveolar process of maxilla and mandible
I: Blends into fibers of orbicularis oris
A: Compresses cheeks

Nasalis

O: Maxilla and alar cartilage of nose
I: Bridge of nose
A: Compresses bridge, depresses tip of nose; elevates corners of nostrils. (Flares nose, Wrinkles nose)

Medial Pterygoid

O: Pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone
I: Ramus and condylar process of mandible on medial side
A: Elevates the mandible and closes the jaw, or performs lateral excursion

Lateral Pterygoid

O: Pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone
I: Ramus and condylar process of mandible on medial side
A: Opens jaw, protrudes mandible , or performs lateral excursion

Digastric

O: Anterior belly: Inferior surface of mandible at chin Posterior belly: Mastoid region of temporal bone
I: Hyoid bone
A: Depresses mandible elevates larynx

Omohyoid

O: Superior border of scapula near scapular notch
I: Hyoid bone
A: Depresses hyoid bone and larynx
