Definitions

Inference An interpretationg of an observation.
Measurement Means of expressing an observation with greater accuracy or precision.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Volume The amount of space that an object occupies.
Density The concentration of matter in an object.
Change Occurs when the properties or characteristics of a part of the environment have been altered.
Event The ovvurrence of a change in the properties of an object or a system.
Field How much a meazsurable aspect of the environment.
Prediction A type of inference about the conditions and behavior of the environment in the future.
Natural Hazard A non-human-related object, process, or situation that has the possibiolity of causing loss of life, personal injury, or loss of property.
Interface The boundary between regions with different properties.
Dynamic Equilibrium Evironmental equilibrium resulting from opposing forces or actions balancing out.
Natural Resources The materials and energy sources found in the environment that humans use in their daily lives.
Pollution The environment occurs when the concentration of any substance or form of energy reaches a proportion that adversely affects people or their property, or other life forms.
Model A way of representing the properties of an object or system.
Atmosphere The layer of gases that surrounds Earth above the surface of liquid water and rocky material.
Pauses The interfaces, or boundaries, of the layers of Earth's atmosphere.
Hydrosphere The layer of liquid water that lies between the atmosphere and much of the upper layer of Earth's interior.
Lithosphere The layer of rock that forms the solid outer shell at the top of Earth's interior.
Crust Upper portion of the lithosphere.
Soil Material contains abundant organic matter.
Earth's Interior The region extending from the rocky part of Earth's surface to Earth's center.
Gradient The rate of change from place to place within the field.
Galaxy A huge group of stars held together by gravity.
Milky Way Galaxy The group of billions of stars that includes the sun and our solar system, it is visible as a faint band of light acrss the night sky
Light-Year The distance electromagnetic energy can travel in one year, approximately 6 trillion miles (10 trillion km)
Red Shift A displacementr of the spectral lines of very distant stars and galaxies, an invrease in the wavelength of starlight caused by rapid relative motion of star waway from the observer.
Doppler Effect The apparent change in frequency and wavelenth of energy radiated by a source as a result of the motion of the source or the ovserver
Cosmic Backround Radiation Weak electromagnetic radiation (radio waves) left over from the formation of the universe (big bang)
Big Bang Theory The theory that the universe formed as a concentration of matter expanded explosively
Liminosity The acrual brightness of a star or rate of total energy emitted compared to the Sun.
Nuclear Fusion The combining of the nuclei of smaller elements with some of the mas being converted into energy.
Star Usually a large ball of gas held together by gravity that produces trmendous amounts of energy and shines.
Terrestial Planets Close to the sun and mostly solid. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
Jovian Planits Far from the sun and are largely gaseous. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Rotation Planets spin on an imaginary axis in a motion.
Revolution Its movement around the sun in a path.
Ellipse Earth's orbit is an obal shape.
Eccentricity The out-of-roundness of an ellipse.
Inertia THe concept that an object at rest will rtend to remain at rest.
Gravitation The attractive force that exists between any two objects in the universe.
