Know the contributions of Herman Ebbinghaus to the study of memory. He was the first to take an empirical look at memory. Through his own personal experience with memorization he discovered that items stored in LTM are stable over time.
Ebbinghaus (1885): Method Rehearsed 420 lists. Each list had 13 nonsense syllables each, he repeated and rehearsed each list 35 times. Participant was himself. IV- retention interval (immediate->one month) DV- proportion of syllables recalled
Ebbinghaus (1885): Results Proportion of syllables recalled decreased as a function of retention interval
Ebbinghaus (1885): Conclusions Ebbinghaus concluded that routine memorization can be useful but is limited in its capacity to retain large quantities
What are the common measures of retention? There are three common measures of retention.
Recall: requires the subject to reproduce information on their own w/o any cues. IE: Exp 10
Recognition: requires a subject to select previously learned information from an array of options. IE:having to choose from a list and pick out previously learned words
Relearning: requires someone to memorize information a 2nd time to determine how much time, or how many practice trials are served by having learned it before. IE: Graduate school
What is the Power Law of learning? It states that items that are stored into memory become stronger every time you use them. Recognition time decreases as a function of practice
Pirolli and anderson (1985) rationale: Had participants practice sentences.
Methosd: IV-days of practice, DV- recognition time for sentences.
Results: recognition time decreased as a function of practice
Give two reasons why the power law of learning is the optimal way for memory to be organized. Memory events that frequently happen/practiced are retained *if events repeatedly occur it is obvious they are important
Memory system gives priority to recent information
*sharper images for recent events
*these events are more likely to happen tomorrow
