De Medici Family
- Powerful Florentine family who controlled the city internally, manipulating
constitution & influencing elections.
-Began with Cosimo, a statesman,
wealthy banker, politician, and
head of the Office of Public Debt
- stabilised the city under a loyal eight-member council, the Signoria
- Lorenzo the Magnificent, followed in a totalitarian-esque fashion; was cautious and determined after death of his
brother @ hand of the Pazzi family

Humanism -cultural and intellectual movement during the Renaissance
- rediscovery of the art and literature of ancient Greece and Rome
- philosophy concerned with the interests, achievements, and capabilities of human beings
City States- Italy lacked unity during the renaissance, so towns governed themselves like independent city states.
-No king to build up a government for Italy as a whole; popes were usually absent, so cities got their influence from Rome.
-some cities run by merchant oligarchies -Milan run by prince/ despot
- Florence, Venice, and Genoa: republics; leaders contended for public office, produced works of public munificence, hired armies, and conducted affairs of state.
