Alliteration

repetition of the initial sound in a word

Assonance

repetition of a vowel sound

Ballad

Narrative song with recurrent refrain

Consonance

repetition of the same consonant sound (can be anywhere in the word)

Figurative Language

describing something by comparing it to something else, includes figures of speech

Hyperbole

exaggeration

Imagery

use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions or ideas

Lyric

musical poetry

Metaphor

compares two unlike things not using like or as

Meter

basic rhythm structure of a verse or words in a verse

Mood

the feeling a reader gets when reading a story

Narrative

poem that tells a story

Onomatopoeia

the word makes a sound it represents

Personification

makes an unreal object do human things

Poem

form of writing often with strong rhythm or rhyme that tells a story or relates to experiences

Repetition

word or phrase used over and over again in poetry done for effect or emphasis

Rhyme

repetition of an end sound

Rhyme Scheme

pattern of letters that corresponds to rhyme in a poem

Internal Rhyme

two or more words in the same line that rhyme

Rhythm

pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables

Simile

compares two unlike things using like or as

Speaker

the person who speaks in the poem

Stanza

group of verses in a poem

Symbol

person, image, or object that represents something else as well as itself

Synecdoche

part for whole and whole for part

Tone

authors voice or attitude about what he or she writes about

Understatement

refers to the intentional downplaying of a situation often for ironic or humorous effect

line or lines of a poem
