Definitions

Parietal Bone either of two skull bones between the frontal and occipital bones and forming the top and sides of the cranium
Occipital bone a saucer-shaped membrane bone that forms the back of the skull
frontal bone the large cranial bone forming the front part of the cranium: the forehead and the upper part of the orbits
temporal bone a thick bone forming the side of the human cranium and encasing the inner ear
coronal suture the suture between the parietal and frontal bones of the skull
lacrimal bone small fragile bone making up part of the front inner walls of each eye socket and providing room for the passage of the lacrimal ducts
ethmoid bone one of the eight bones of the cranium
sphenoid bone butterfly-shaped bone at the base of the skull
perpendicular plate inferior projection of the ethmoid that forms the superior part of the nasal septum
vomer bone forms the base for the nasal septum
mandible bone Lower jaw
sagittal suture the suture uniting the two parietal bones
squamous suture suture on each side of the skull, separating the temporal bone and the parietal bone
lambdoidal suture suture that separates parietal bones from occipital bone
palatine bone either of two irregularly shaped bones that form the back of the hard palate and helps to form the nasal cavity and the floor of the orbits
fontanel any membranous gap between the bones of the cranium in an infant or fetus
meninges a membrane (one of 3) that envelops the brain and spinal cord
nasal septum a partition of bone and cartilage between the nasal cavities
crista galli vertical projection providing a point of attachment for the dura mater, helping to secure the brain within the skull
cribiform plate superior surface of the ethmoid; perforated by a foramina which allows passage of the olfactory nerves, which provide sense of smell
maxilla the upper jawbone in vertebrates
external auditory meatus opening for the ear
sella tursica where the greater and lesser wings meet at the midline and it is a hollow depression that holds the pituitary gland
occipital condyles Protrusions on the back of the skull which articulates with the vertebra of the back bone
foramen magnum the large opening at the base of the cranium through which the spinal cord passes
styloid process extends from the base of the temporal bone
nasal concha superior, middle and inferior -- nasal turbinates; mucous covered bones extending from lateral walls of nasal cavity; shaped like conche sea shells; increase mucosal surface area and enhance air turbulence in nasal cavity
zygomatic bone the arch of bone beneath the eye that forms the prominence of the cheek
zygomatic arch the slender arch formed by the temporal process of the cheekbone that bridges to the zygomatic process of the temporal bone
temporal process Articulates with zygomatic process of the temporal bone to form the zygomatic arch
