Analogy Consists of two pairs of words in which the relationship between the words in the first pair is the same as the relationship in the second pair. Ex. Hot:Cold::Day:Night (both are opposites) Hyperbole An exaggeration that is beyond belief. Hyperboles are used to make a point and/or to be humorous. Tall tales use many hyperboles. They are not as common in poetry. Ex. His teeth were so white that we had to wear sunglasses when he smiled. His voice was as loud as the sea. Metaphor A comparison of two things that does NOT use "like" or "as". It states the one item is the other. Ex. You are a great buck and a bow. Onomatopoeia A word that sounds like the sound it is describing. Ex. Plop, sizzle, snap, croak, moan, whine, buzz. Personification Gives human actions or qualities to something not human. Ex. The leaves danced on the wind. Repitition+Refrain Repitition is the repeating of wordsor phrases to produce emphasis, rhythm, or a sense of urgency. Ex. I'm being eaten by a boa constrictor, a boa constrictor, a boa constrictor. The phrase is repeated to show a sense of urgency as the boa swallows more and more of the person's body. Refrain is the repitition of a line or lines of poetry at regular intervals throughout the poem, song, or speech. It is also called a chorus. Ex. This land is your land(song) This refrain was repeated to stress the idea the land belongs to all of us. Rhythm The pattern of beats or stressed syllables in language. It can be regular or random. Ex. There once was a lady from Niger. Once, la, and Ni are stressed syllables. Rhyme The repitition of sounds at the ends of words. Ex. There, hair, bare. Simile A comparison of two things using the words "like" or "as". Ex. Mary had a little lamb. Its fleece was white as snow.
