JustAnotherNumber : It's a smaller version of something that's happening on a larger scale. For example, Benin was once prosperous and civilized, like Africa, but then the slave trade came in and ruined it, also like Africa. In this way, Benin is a microcosm of Africa - a smaller-scale version of the same basic event.
