Select All freedmens school schools for freed blacks which was then destroyed in the south by southerns and teachers were threatened and killed the contract system african americans demanded that they could decide who do work for, and that planters could not abuse or split families the contract system drawbacks workers could not leave the plantation with out permission, owners cheated workers out of wages, laws punished workers for breaking their contracts (even if being abused) 40 acres and mule african americans thought that they at least deserved 40 acres and a mule. land reform act of 1867 radical republican leaders thought that congress should take away land from plantation owners and give it to freed people but many republicans disapproved because they thought that new civil and voting right was enough. congress did not pass this. sharecropping worker rents a plot of land and is given land and seeds, and in excahnge he give the landowner half the crop he grows. problems of sharecropping farmers and landowners had opposite goal such as farmers wanted food, landowners wanted cotton. the result that farmers had to buy from store, which some couldnt afford. So they were caught in a cycle of debt. also, white farmers were these because they lost their land in war, or taxes result of sharecropping south had to import half of its food due to the value of cotton dropping. this is why the south expirenced rural poverty from relying on cotton Ku Klux Klan south also faced racism. planters and confederate soldiers did not want AF to have more rights so they formed this secret group. They wanted to restore deomocratic control of the south and keep former slaves powerless. they attacked african americans, mostly who owned land or had prospered. Ku Kulx Klan lynched killing vitims on the spot without a trial as punishment for a supposed crime. they also attacked white republicans.KKK had little protection and military in south ignored them. Pres. Johnson appiont most of this, against reconstruction. KKK increased democratic power election of Grant 1868 Grant won. during campaign dem. attacked reconstruction policies. he won mostly because of freedmens vote. fifteenth ammedment republicans worred south may keep trying to prevent african americans from voting. This ammendment states that all citizens con not be stopped from voting on account of race, color, or previous conditions of servitutied. raified in 1860. African A. could not vote in 16 state, nation turned twords democracy. this did not apply to women which angered them grant fights the Klan KKK still did their thing with African Americans. Congress passed a law against the klan which was called the anti-klan bill. Grant won a second term. scandal and panic weakened republicans support of republicans and reconstruction weakened and caused divisions which caused a financial panic and turned the country attention away from reconstruction. grant did not choose correct advisers (unqualified). scaldals from bribes outraged rebublicans and made them break away which caused them to approve reconstruction policies.
