cell membrane | regulates what enters and leaves the cell and also provides protection and support |
cell wall | provides support and protection for the cell |
lipid bilayer | a double layered sheet which is the composition of nearly all cell membranes |
concentration | the mass of a solute in a given volume of a solution, or mass/volume |
diffusion | particles in a solution tend to move from one area that is more concentrated to an area that is less concentrated |
equilibrium | When the concentration of a solute is the same without a system |
osmosis | the diffusion of water through a selectivly permeable membrane |
isotonic | "same strength" when two solutions are equall in strength |
hypertonic | "above strength" when one solution is greater than the other |
hypotonic | "below strength" one one solution is less than the other |
facilitated diffusion | molecules that can not diffuse across the cell membranes lipid bilayer on their own move through protein channels instead |
active transport | cells sometimes must move materials in the oppostite direction - against a concentration diffrence |
endocytosis | taking materials into the cell by means of infoldings, or pockets of the cell membrane |
phagocytosis | extensions of cytoplasm surround a particle and package it within a food vacuole |
pinocytosis | tiny pockets form along the cell membrane, fill with liqued, and pinch off to form vacuoles within the cell |
exocytosis | the membrane of the vacuole sourounding the material fuses with the cell membrane, forcing contents out of the cell |
