MMT

purpose is used to gain infor about the strength of individual muscles

MMT factors affecting strength

1. age (peak at 20-30) 2. gender (males are generally stronger) 3. muscle size ( larger muscles generate more) 4. Types of contraction 5. Joint position ( angle of pull, length-tension) 6. level of fatigue

Types of contractions

1. Eccentric - muscle lengthening during contraction, most tension 2. Isometric - No motion during contraction 3. Concentric - muscle shortening during contraction, least tension

Contraindications for MMT

1. presence of inflammation 2. presence of pain 3. pt's with heart disease or recent abdominal sx need to avoid Valsalva maneuver (holding breath) 4. pt's with certain neuromuscular diseases such as MS or post polio syndrome

MMT Grading System 5/5 N (normal)

Against gravity the pt able to maintain test position & maximum resistance. No detectable difference between affected & unaffected sides

MMT Grading System 4/5 G (good)

Against gravity the pt able to maintain test position & Moderate resistance. There is a slight difference between affected & unaffected sides

MMT Grading System 4-/5 G-

Against gravity the pt able to maintain test position & less than Moderate resistance. Moderate difference between affected & unaffected sides

MMT Grading System 3+/5 F+

Against gravity pt maintain test position & Minimum resistance. Significant difference between sides

MMT Grading System 3/5 F(fair)

Against gravity pt able to actively move thru full available ROM & able to maintain test position against gravity

MMT Grading System 3-/5 F-

Against gravity pt able to actively move thru greater than half of available ROM

MMT Grading System 2+/5 P+

Against gravity pt able to actively move thru less than half of available ROM

MMT Grading System 2/5 P(poor)

Gravity eliminated (movement in horizontal), pt actively move thru the full ROM

MMT Grading System 2-/5 P-

Gravity eliminated (movement in horizontal), pt actively move thru greater than half of the available ROM

MMT Grading System 1+/5 T+

Gravity eliminated (movement in horizontal), pt able to actively move thru less than half of the available ROM

MMT Grading System 1/5 T(trace)

Gravity eliminated (movement in horizontal), pt unable to move, but there is a palpable/observable muscle contraction

MMT Grading System 0/5 0(zero)

Gravity eliminated (movement in horizontal), pt unable to move & NO palpable/observable muscle conctraction
