1st Amendment | Freedom of religion, speech, press, the right to assemble and to petition |
2nd Amendment | The right to bear arms |
3rd Amendment | The government may not house soldiers in private homes without consent of the owner |
4th Amendment | Protects you from unreasonable search and seizure of your home and property by state and government officials without probable cause stated in a warrant |
5th Amendment | Punishments cannot be given without due process. A person does not have to testify against themselves. No double jeopardy |
6th Amendment | The right to a fair and speedy public trial. Must be notified of accusations, right to a lawyer |
7th Amendment | Right to trial by jury in civil cases |
8th Amendment | No excessive bail and fines may be set. Cruel and unusual punishments are prohibited |
9th Amendment | There are other rights than those listed in the Constitution |
10th Amendment | All rights not given to the Federal government by the Consitution belongs to the states and to the people |
11th Amendment | Can sue another state with the permission of that states Judicial system |
12th Amendment | The Electoral College chooses the president and the vice persident. They run together |
13th Amendment | abolished slavery in the states |
14th Amendment | Due process and equal protection under the law. All people born in the U.S. are United States citizens |
15th Amendment | Right to vote is given to men of all races |
16th Amendment | Congress has the power to tax each individual based on income |
17th Amendment | the people directly elect their Senators |
18th Amendment | bans alcohol in the states |
19th Amendment | gives women equal rights and the right to vote |
20th Amendment | changes the ignauguration date of Congress and the President to January (eleminates the lame duck) |
21st Amendment | Repeals the 18th amendment, taking away the ban on alcohol in the states |
22nd Amendment | limits the number of presidential terms to 2 |
23rd Amendment | D.C. can vote for President |
24th Amendment | Prohibits the states from taxing people for voting |
25th Amendment | extends the line of presidential succession |
26th Amendment | lowers the voting age to 18 |
27th Amendment | If Congress approves a pay raise then it does not take effect until the next term |
