Civil War: Military Dictatorship vs. FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front). The military dictatorship (government) resulted in los desaparecidos and abused human rights privelages. FMLN consisted of impoverished members and tortured people (they were pro-communism). US gave money to support the military dictatorship.

The Panama canal was built by order of President Roosevelt in 1903 so boats could have a shorter passage across the atlantic ocean instead of having to go around south america which sped up transportation. The Panama Canal treaty was created in 1977 and gave Panama increasing amounts of power until the year 2000 when it took full control of the canal.
Dictator of Panama. He had close ties with the US Army Intelligence, CIA, and DEA. He helped the US spy on Fidel Castro, Aided in warfare against El Salvador, and worked with the DEA. However he was suspected to traffic drugs through the canal. After becoming miitary dictator, he was no longer useful to the us. He authorized hostile acts towards the US military personnel, and a marine was murdered so Bush sent troops to invade.
Born in Argentina in 1928. After going on a motorcycle trip, he saw the horrors of poverty which motivated him to become a doctor, which he became in 1953 after atending medical school. Fidel Castro had a similar idea to help the needy and so together they joined forces in hopes of overthrowing Cuba's dictator, Batista. He was not supported by the US, who actually killed him in Bolivia. The US invaded cuba at the bay of pigs to stop the growing relations between cuba and the soviet union (oil connections). the US was defeated. Che trained people in guerilla warfare. He went to Congo in Africa to continue to spread communism but this failed. then he tried bolivia, when he was killed by use of guerilla warfare.

This movement was named after Fidel and Raul's previous failed attempt to overthrow batista in july of 1953. Gave Ernesto Guevara the name of "Che" which means Friend.
Took power in cuban revolution from Batista with help of Che Guevara and his bro Raul Castro in 1959. Seen as a heroe for expanding educational opportunities, improving healthcare, and providing jobs. Writes for GRANMA which is the Communist Party newspaper in Cuba
Since the US was concerned about Cuba's policies and its close ties to the USSR, it canceled trade relations. Today the embargo allows agricultural and telecommunications exports from the US to Cuba. Failed goal to remove Castro from power.

US citizens, no taxes, cant vote.

Beloved leader Salvador Allende was killed on Sept 11, 1973 and noone knows by who. Pinochet took over and was a horrid dictator. Later, Michelle Bachelet took his place as the first female president of SA. She came from a poor family who dealt with the horrors inflicted upon them by Pinochet.

Trujillo was horrible dictator that wanted to whiten population and killed dark skinned people. Led Parsley masacre where if someone couldnt say "Perejil" properly then they were killed.
