Jacobins | Groups of French radicals that met to discuss reforms. |

Nationalism | Idea that loyalty to one's nation should be placed above all other loyalties. |
Napoleon | Leader of France following the Directory. Conquered most of Europe between 1805 and 1815. |
Reign of Terror | Massacre of 16,000-50,000 French citizens during the French Revolution. |
Continental System | Napoleon's control of European ports, including a boycott on British goods. |
Girondin | Opposition to the Mountain in Revolutionary France. |
Committee of Public Safety | Organization created to counter anti-French influences. Perpetuated the Reign of Terror. |
Estates-General | Parliamentary system of France organized around social classes. |
The Mountain | Represented the city of Paris. Mostly radical middle class. |
Paris Commune | Rulers of Paris. A radical group that ultimately arrested the Girondin, leading to more violence in the revolution. |
Dechristianization | The move to remove God from French public life. Included renaming streets & changing Notre Dame into the "Temple of Reason." |
National Assembly | The new name of the French legislative body, who swore the tennis court oath (promise to create a new constitution). |
Bourgeoisie | The wealthy portion of the middle class. Usually credited with actually running society. |
Great Fear | When rumors of foreign invasion plagued France, leading to a large number of militias. |
Thermidorean Reaction | When the National Convention seized control of the Committee of Public Safety and established the Directory. |
Jean-Paul Marat | Radical journalist who called for blood during the French Revolution. His murder led to his being viewed as a kind of saint by the radical revolution. |
