Popular Sovereignty a government in which the people rule
Republicanism the people exercise their power by voting for their political representative
Federalism a system of government in which the states and national governments share powers: delegated, reserved, concurrent
Separation of Powers the division of basic government roles into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial
Checks and Balances power is evenly distributed between the three branches of government; the three branches are separate but rely on one another to perform the work of government
