Battle of Long Island
(August 1776- first major battle after Declaration of Independence) - 1400 American slaughtered/ killed. George Washington gets his bum kicked. Spy Nathan Hale captured and hung. GW on the run. Says to himself British are better we can't fight face to face or we will lose. Changed tactics= no battles instead small skirmishes & not lose then run away. Guerilla tactics. Drew war out (made longer) which made the war more unpopular in Britain (like ware in Iran over 9/11 Bin Laden)
(Dec. 26, 1776)
While Hessians celebrating Xmas, GW sneaks attacks across Delaware River. Snuck because Hessians had lookouts. Icy roads cut through American footwear= followed bloody trail. Confused- 900 Hessians are taken prisoners. Victory= 1000s of volunteers joined American army. Not a big victory, morale booster. GW= no wrong after this. Month before this Continental Congress was discussing firing GW and hiring new. Convinced thousands more to join army

GW and French troops under General Rochambeau attacked since British are trapped (GW and Rochambeau cut off land way and French Nay cut off waterway) and began siege- last for 1 month. 17,000 American soldiers vs. 8,000 British. All during this month GW and Rochambeau are getting closer and closer (point blank range) Cornwallis surrendered. Lord North (prime minister) = "It is all over". Last major battle.
