Back in Victorian england, hatters would use mercury to polish there hats. Well hatters would go insane, creating the saying "mad as a hatter." Mercury is still used in products today, just not to polish hats.
Lead is used to block radiation from x-rays, or nuclear reactors. Lead is also used in wires, cables, and cars.
Radon is a radioactive material that has a short half-life, but decays into a solid and longer lived radioactive element.
