1585 Roanoke (the date)
Jamestown the first English colony in America, formed in 1607.
Magna Carta an agreement written in 1215 between King John and the rebellious barbarians that gave rights to freedom to "all people." This was the first code of law.
king cant tax w/out consent of the nobles. further limits power of monarch
proprietary colony a type of charter; a colony owned by a person after recieving a land grant from a king. (usually the king owes them a favor so he lets them have the land)
join stock colony a colony founded for the purpose of making people money (Jamestown)

Since its rocky the people can't farm so instead they do subsistence farming, trading, and shipbuilding.
New England Colonies:

FARM corn & grains. nicknamed the "Breadbasket."
Middle Colonies:

hot
flat land.
So they do commercial farming. They have cash crops and grow: tobacco, indigo, and rice.
But it is a lot of work
