Definitions

Quarterback Person who lines up behind and receives the snap from the center when they say hike. He also either hands the ball off, passes or runs with the football
Offensive Line consists of three people, one being the center, whom have one common goal ; Block the defender trying to rush the quarterback
Wide Receiver The wide receiver lines up on the line of scrimmage towards the sidelines and runs patterns in ordr to get open for a pass
Running Back Lines up beside the quarterback and has several options: run the ball, go out for a pass, or help block oncoming defenders
Defensive Line These are tree people who are trying to get by the offensive line and sack the quarterback or stop the run play
Cornerback This is the position that tries to defend the wide receiver by stopping them from catching a pass
Free Safety This is the centerfielder of football. This position can roam the middle of the field and try to predict where the ball is going to be thrown or ran and react to the ball
Linebacker this is the defender who lines up behindthe defensive line and can either cover the running back or blitz the quarterback
Number of Players 7 players on offense and 7 players on defense
Offense Players 1 Quarterback; 3 Offensive Linemen; 2 Wide Receivers; and 1 Running Back
Defense Players 1 Free Safety; 3 Defensive Linemen; 2 Cornerbacks; and 1 Linebacker
Line of Scrimmage This is where the last play ended so the next play will begin from the imaginary line where the ball is located
Downs The offense will have 4 tries or downs to get the distance needed for a 1st down or touchdown, while the defense tries to stop them
4th Down The offensive team will have the option to either go for the 1st down or punt/kick the ball to the opponent. (the returning team can not block; they must all line up on the line of scrimmage)
Touchdown When a player gets the ball into the other team's endzone that they are trying to protect (6 points)
Extra Point Your team will have one attempt to score from 5 yars away from the endzone directly after scoring a touchdown. (1 point)
Safety When the defensive team stops the offensive player with the ball in their own endzone (2 point and possession of the ball)
Offsides When an offensive or defensive player lines up or leaves too early, ending up on the other side of the line of scrimmage (5 yard penalty)
Holding This is when an offensive player holds the defender trying to pursue the ball (10 yard penalty replay down)
Clipping When an offensive player blocks the defender in the back (10 year penalty, replay down)
Bull Rushing If a defender tries to run over, instead of around, a blocking offensive player they will be penalized (10 yards penalty, automatic 1st down)
Pass Interference If the offensive or defensive player makes illegal contact or interferes with an opponent going after a pass (offensive 15 yards, replay down -- defensive 15 yards, automatic 1st down)
Flag Guarding Any attempt to stop a defender from pulling your flag (5 year penalty from the spot of the foul)
Tackling If a player tackles another, whether offensive or defensive, it will be a 15 yard penalty. (If occurs more than once by the same player your will have to sit out the remainder of the game)
ButtonhookThe buttonhook route is when a receiver runs straight upfield a certain distance and then plants hard and runs straight back towards the quarterback. Often simply called a hook route. In some cases, a hook is considered a very long buttonhook, such as 10+ yards downfield. Hence the receiver must dig his cleats in hard to stop and come back at the quarterback after running so far and fast.
Center A player position on offense. The center usually snaps the ball. The middle lineman is not always the snapper.
End zone The area between the end line and the goal line, bounded by the sidelines. Space on the field that you score touch downs.
Huddle An on-field gathering of members of a team in order to secretly communicate instructions for the upcoming play.
Interception The legal catching of a forward pass thrown by an opposing player.
National Football League (NFL) The largest professional American football league, with 32 teams split into 2 conferences (National & American), 4 divisions each (North, West, East, South).
Punt A kick in which the ball is dropped and kicked before it reaches the ground. Used to give up the ball to the opposition after offensive downs have been used, as far down the field as possible.
