Genderlect -masculine and feminine styles of communication are best viewed as two distinct cultures
-playing by different rules
So What are the different rules according to Tannen? 1. Status vs. Support
2. Independance vs. Intimacy
3. Advice vs. Understanding
4. Rapport vs. Report
5. Orders vs. Proposals
1. Status vs. Support -Males -Females
status support oriented
one up(ing) concerned with making
*establishing order connections
in the hierarchy
2. Independance vs. Intimacy -Males are taught to value independance
*the playboy, hero, cowboy
*best when they are alone
-Females are taught to value intimacy
*the mother, wife, friend
ex: traditional bachelor/bachelorette party
3. Advice vs. Understanding -Males are taught to fix things
*solution driven
-Females are taught to listen
*support driven
4. Rapport vs. Report -Men use talk to gain status and power
*public space this is most seen
*private space they don't have to report so they speak less
-Women use talk to bond and make connections
*public space she monitors and speaks less
*private space she is free to talk more
Who talks more: Men or Women? Men in PUBLIC
Women in PRIVATE
Orders vs. Proposals -Males direct through orders but expect a challenge
*focus on the individual....say what I mean, challenge if you want
-Females communicate through polite proposals, but expect compliance
*focus on others
Some Application...
Telling a Story, How would they differ according to Tannen? males: bragging
females: lowering themselves next to eachother (im so fat, youre so skinny-->No, YOURE skinny...im fat!
How do they differ in the way they ask questions? -Women ask questions seeking connections
-Men ask less and in a way that shows their knowledge
Major Critique of Tannen: Why?-Evidence is vague and selective
-Power is ignored!!
*Many groups with less power exhibit these same tendencies when communicating with empowered individuals
~slaves, boss to subordinate
*Public/Private issue
-More variance among groups than between
-Self fulfilling prophecy (you think you will, so you do
