Stress | The force per unit are acting on any surface within a solid.-Compression -Tensional -Shearing |
Elastic | Nonpermanent deformation in which rock returns to its original shape when the stress is released. |
Plastic | Permanent deformation that results in a change in size and shape through folding or flowing. |
Dome | Circular upwarped displacement of rocks, oldest rocks in core. |
Basin | Downwarped, youngest rocks in core. |
Monocline | A one-limbed flexure in strata. The strata are usually flat lying or very gently dipping on both sides of the monocline. |
Anticline | Fold in sedimentary strata that resembles and arch. |
Syncline | A linear downfold in sedimentary strata; the opposite of anticline. |
Folds | A bent layer or series of layers that were originally horizontal and subsequently deformed, often from under compressional sterss. |
Dip-Slip Fault | A fault in which the movement is parallel to the dip of the fault. |
Strike-Slip Fault | A fault along which movement is horizontal. |
Normal Fault | A fault in which the rock above the fault plane has moved down relative to the rock below. |
Fault | A break in a rock mass along which movement has occurred. |
Reverse Fault | Material above the fault plane moves up in relation to the material below. |
Thrust Fault | A low angle reverse fault. |
Strata | Paralled layers of sedimentary rock. |
