# Algebra Review

## 19 terms · I need a good grade on my algebra mid-term, and Quizlet(tm) has worked wonders for me before...I hope it'll pull through for me now...

### Direct Variation

2 variables x and y show a direct variation, provided y=ax and "a" doesn't equal 0.

### Rate

A fraction that compared two quantities measured in different quantities.

### Unit Rate

A rate per one given unit.

### Verbal Phrase

"m increased by 5"

"m+5"

### Inequality

An open sentence that contains < (less than), >(greater than), ≤ (less than or equal to), or ≥ (greater than or equal to).

### Open Sentence

A mathematical statement that contains 2 expressions and a symbol that compares them.

### Equation

An open sentence that contains the symbol "=".

### Solution

A number that when substituted for the variable results in a true statement. Put solutions in braces. { }

### Commutative Property

The order in which you add or multiply a set of numbers doesn't change the sum/product. a+b=b+a and a(b)=b(a)

### Associative Property

The way you group a set of numbers in addition or multiplication doesn't change the sum/product. (a+b)+c=a+(b+c) and (ab)c=a(bc)

### Distributive Property

Can be used to find the product of a number and a sum or difference. a(b+c)=ab+ac

### Recursive Routines

A recursive routine is an ordered list of numbers defined by a starting value and a rule.

### Possible Routines

1. NEXT=NOW+x
2.x ENTER
ANS+x ENTER ENTER ENTER
3. {x,y}
ANS+{x,y} ENTER ENTER ENTER
4. {x,y}
{ANS(1)+1, ANS(2)+x} ENTER ENTER ENTER

### Linear Equation

An equation whose graph is a straight line.

A linear equation is an equation that can be written in standard form which is Ax+By=C

### Non Linear Equation

When 2 points on a graph are on the same y-axis line, it is nonlinear.

### Slope

The slope of a graph is its rate of change, how fast it increases or decreases. The slope of a line can also be described as its steepness, how fast the line rises and falls.

A graph's slope is usually described as its rise (change in y) over run (change in x).

### Slope-Intercept Form

y=mx+b is one form of linear function.

m=slope and b=y-intercept.

### Scatter Plot

A scatter plot is a way of displaying 2 sets of data as ordered pairs. It is the pattern of the points that determines the relationship between the two sets of data. There are 3 types of relationships: positive, negative, and no relationship. Positive is when the trend line goes up, negative is when the trend line goes down, and no relationship is when there is no trend in the data.
