Continental Drift the hypothesis that the continents slowly move across Earth's surface
Pangaea The supercontinent formed near the end of the Paleozoic era when plate movements brought all the landmasses of Earth together.
Fossil the remains (or an impression) of a plant or animal that existed in a past geological age and that has been excavated from the soil
Mid-Ocean Ridges an undersea mountain chain
Sea-Floor Spreading The process that creates new sea floor as plates move away from each other at the mid-ocean ridges
Deep-Ocean Trenches Underwater cayons formed when the oceanic crust bends downward
Subduction the process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary
Plates large pieces of earths crust that move due to convection currents
Divergent Boundary a plate boundary where two plates move away from each other
Convergent Boundary a plate boundary where two plates move toward each other
Transform Boundary boundary between two plates that are sliding past each other.
Plate Tectonics the theory that pieces of Earth's lithosphere are in constant motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle
Faults cracks in the earth's crust
