Audition | a test in which a performer seeking employment appears before judges who may become employers. |
Actor | a person who performs in a drama in any form; the term has replaced the earlier player. |
Player | a performer in a play; a term commoner than actor in Shakespeare;s time, but seldom used now. |
Supernumerary | a member of a troupe of stock company with a subordinate job in a production. |
Understudy | member of a theatrical company prepared to take the place of a major performer or other person. |
Double Part | "doubling" of roles so one performer plays two or more roles |
Foil | in literature, any person who through contrast underscores the distinctive characteristics of another, like Laertes, who is a foil to Hamlet. |
Monologue | a composition giving the discourse by one speaker; what someone would speak aloud in a situation with listeners, although they do not speak. |
Dramatic Monologue | a poem that reveals "a soul in action" through the speech of one character in a dramatic situation. The character speaking is an identifiable but silent listener at a dramatic moment in the speaker's life. |
Monodrama | same as dramatic monologue. Also can be a series of extended dramatic monologues that tell a connected story or a theatrical presentation that features only one actor. |
Soliloquy | a speech delivered while the speaker is alone to inform the audience of what is passing in the character's mind. |
Aside | a dramatic convention in which an actor directly addresses the audience but is not supposed to be heard by the other actors on the stage. |
Dialogue | a conversation of two or more people. |
Colloquy | same as dialogue, especially a formal discussion or conference. |
Duologue | a scene or short play with two actors; a dramatic performance limited to two speakers. |
Charade | the silent acting our of the meaning of a syllable or a homonym. |
