ethanol The intoxicating agent in fermented and distilled liquors
stimulant a drug that increases the action of the central nervous system, the heart, and other organs
depressant A drug that slows down the activity of the central nervous system
narcotic a type of drug that dulls the senses, relieves pain, and induces sleep; the term is usually reserved for those drugs derived from the opium poppy plant
