uterus | pear-shaped organ in which fetus grows and develops until birth |
fallopian tube | a tube through which eggs move from the ovary to the uterus, fertilization takes place here |
ovary | female reproductive organ that produces egg cells and hormones |
endometrium | lining of the uterus |
menstruation | phase of the menstrual cycle during which the lining of the uterus, along with blood and the unfertilized egg, is discharged through the vagina |

urethra | tube leading from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body |
cowper's gland | Secrete preejaculatory fluid into the urethra, coats the urethra to neutralize the ph of any urine residue in the urethra, 5% of semen |
prostate | A gland in human males that secrete an acid-neutralizing component of semen located under the bladder and around the urethra, 35% of semen |
seminal vesicles | two small glands that secrete a fluid rich in sugar that nourishes and helps sperm move, located at the base of the bladder, 60% of semen |
semen | a thick fluid containing sperm and other secretions from the male reproductive system |
ejaculation | the expelling of semen from the penis, brought about by the involuntary muscular contractions of orgasm. |
vas deferens | tube that carries sperm from the epididymis to the urethra |
epididymis | tube located at the top of the testes that stores matured sperm |
testes | two small glands that secrete testosterone and produce sperm |
scrotum | sac that holds and regulates the temperature of the testes |
embryo | the developing human organism from about 2 weeks after fertilization through the ninth week. |
fetus | the developing human organism from 9 weeks after conception to birth |
placenta | Organ attached to the uterus that provides food and oxygen to and removes waste from developing young |
umbilical cord | A structure with blood vessels that connect the embryo to the placenta. |
labor | undergo the efforts of childbirth: softening of the cervix, birth, after birth |
miscarriage | the natural termination/unexpected death of a developing baby before twenty weeks of pregnancy |
abortion | the deliberate termination of a pregnancy |

HIV/AIDS | Infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), an antiretro virus. It attacks and destroys the immune system, specifically the T cells. |
HPV | human papillomavirus. most common uncurable STD. no cure for HPV; many different kinds so it can be low-risk or fatal - genital warts |
Hepatitis | a viral disease of the liver characterized by yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes, bloodborne |
herpes | a viral disease that causes red sores on the mouth and genitals, contracted by skin contact, abstinence prevents it |
gonorrhea | A sexually transmitted bacterial disease caused by a bacteria that causes inflammation of the genital mucous membrane, burning pain when urinating, and a discharge |
syphillis | serious bacterial STD that progresses through sever distinct stages but is only curable in its early stages |
trichomonas | highly contagious, caused by protozoan trichomanas vaginalis, inhabits the vagina and lower ur tract, profuse vaginal discharge, often frothy or bubbly, greenish-gray in color and smelly....and cervix may have strawberry patches |
asymptomatic | have the infection but not showing any of the typical symptoms of the disease or condition. |
Elisa | screening test to detect anti-HIV antibodies in the bloodstream |
western blot test | is a blood test that produces a more accurate results than the ELISA test. This test is used to confirm the diagnosis when the results of the ELISA test are postive. |
AZT | first treatment to slow reproduction of HIV given to HIV+ pregnant women, an antiretroviral drug |
vasectomy | surgical cutting and sealing off of each vas deferens to sterilize a man |
tubal ligation | Surgical tying off of the fallopian tubes to prevent conception from taking place. Results in sterilization of the female. |
retro virus | RNA viruses that cause AIDS, tumors and leukemia. It inserts its DNA copy to reproduce and destroy the cell it invaded. |
virus | a tiny, nonliving particle that invades and then reproduces inside a living cell |
bacteria | one-celled microorganisms, some of which are beneficial and some of which cause disease |
STD/STI | infectious diseases spread from person to person through sexual contact |
